My name is Laura Craita and I’ve always had a penchant for the fine arts. This led me to attend the Regina Maria National College of Arts in Constanta, from middle school to high school. After that, I continued my studies in a different direction, not related to fine arts.
Due to events in my life, I was away from my creative side for a while. However, in 2018, in Israel, I rediscovered it without intending to. I stumbled into the Ging Pottery workshop by chance and found myself in touch with the potter’s wheel, which I frequented constantly for two years.
This contact was love at first sight and a discovery that filled the creative void in my life.
The next leg of my journey was to Cyprus, where I spent two years attending the courses of a renowned ceramist, Efthymios Symeou. There I timidly started setting up my own ceramics studio. Ever since I discovered my passion for ceramics, I have been in a constant quest for perfection and development.
I attended courses in Italy at La Meridiana International School of Ceramics, where I studied pottery wheel making. Later, I completed a special course in understanding glazes, where I learned to develop and adjust my own glazes, adding uniqueness to my pieces.
In 2022, I returned to the country and set up my own workshop in the Nod Makerspace in Bucharest. That’s where I currently work and create.
Products
In my workshop, I use traditional techniques and a hands-on approach to create each piece.
I make ceramic vases, ceramic plate sets, handmade ceramic mugs, tea sets and more.
Each piece is carefully hand-finished and hand-glazed, so each is unique and full of character.
Some objects are designed, sketched and tested. Others are created spontaneously with spur of the moment inspiration.
Spontaneity is the gift that clay gives me.
Process
The creation process is slow and cannot be rushed, from the first step to the final burn takes on average 10 days.
I start by kneading the clay that I form into balls of various weights, I then sit down at the wheel. The rhythmic sound of the wheel creates music to which my hands will dance together pinching, pushing, pulling the clay with gentle but firm touches. When the object is ready I let it dry partially.
When the clay is firm but still malleable I use tools to carve and define the final shape. The objects are left to dry again and go through a transformation, the clay dries, becomes hard and brittle.
After the objects are completely dry , they are carefully placed in the kiln where they are fired at 980°C. The firing makes the clay go through a new transformation, from clay to ceramic, the objects are prepared for glazing.
Glaze objects carefully, when glaze is applied correctly it embellishes and beautifies the object and makes it suitable for household or decorative use.
The objects are again placed in the kiln for final firing at 1230°C. The colours and textures of the glaze give life to the objects and add a personal touch that completes the artistic process.
